Power House Memphis: Presents...

Image: Dwayne Butcher, It Is What It Is #5.
Power House Memphis presents: Everywhere, Nowhere, Somewhere…
A Power House Director’s Choice Group Exhibition
July 3-August 10, 2009

Everywhere, Nowhere, Somewhere looks at the oddity of humanity with pieces that border on the bizarre, compulsive and the beautiful. Works question labels of race, gender and cultural identity, highlighting the concept of otherness and how it affects our perception of reality. The sense of wandering implied by Everywhere, Nowhere, Somewhere is embodied by installations that lie on the fringes of categories like sculpture and painting, but do not quite find a home within these classifications. Much of the work deals with the negotiation of identity in a world that is complex, mysterious and anything but black and white. The 2009 Power House Director's Choice Artists are: Keith O. Anderson (NYC), Dwayne Butcher (Memphis), Brendan Fernandes (NYC), Marie Irmgard (Denmark), Charles Huntley Nelson (Atlanta), Kambui Olujimi (NYC), Joel Parsons (Memphis), Jonathan and Mary Postal (Memphis), Jackson Dingo Ryan (Eugene, OR) and Tam Tran (Memphis).

Opening reception from 6-8pm July 3rd

Meikle Gardner @ Material

Material is excited to announce its forty-fourth exhibition: Breathing Spaces.

Breathing Spaces is organized by Michel Allen and will feature work by Stephanie King as well as work by Sally Bennett, Meikle Gardner, and Jim Napierala. As an added bonus, furniture designer, Will McGowen, will provide benches for the exhibition.

Breathing Spaces will run for two days only with a reception on Friday, May 8th from 6-8 pm. Additionally, the gallery will be open on Saturday, May 9th from 2-3:30 pm. Material Art Space is located at 2553 Broad Avenue
Memphis, TN 38112

The exhibition is organized by Southern native, Michel Allen. Allen is a curator currently living in New York. More information on her projects can be found at www.allenprojectsonline.com. Stephanie King’s clever, process based work was the inspiration for the title of the show. She has been featured in a number of The Price is Right shows at David Lusk Gallery. Meikle Gardner is probably the most well known to the Memphis community. He has shown locally at the MAX show at AMUM, Perry Nicole Fine Art, as well as Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts. He moved to New York several years ago and maintains his studio practice while working at Gagosian Gallery. He was featured in a one person show at Michel Allen’s space in Chelsea last fall. Another Memphis native, Sally Bennett currently lives in Connecticut. Jim Napierala has been showing with Allen Gallery for three years. He has shown extensively in New York. His work has been reviewed in Art In America and was featured in an exhibition at the Whitney Musuem's annex space in 1990. Local furniture designer, Will McGowen, will provide benches in the show. His work is meticulous and successfully combines the old with the new.
